YHWH said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided a king for myself among his sons.”


Now David fled and escaped. He went to Samuel at Ramah and told him all that Saul had done to him. Then he and Samuel went and lived in Naioth.


David said in his heart, “I will now perish one day by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than that I should escape-escape into the land of the Philistines. Saul will give up seeking me any more in all the borders of Israel. So I will escape out of his hand.”


David arose and passed over, he and the six hundred men who were with him, to Achish the son of Maoch, king of Gath.


Isn’t this David, of whom people sang to one another in dances, saying, ‘Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands?’”
