Now therefore when I come to your servant my father, and the boy is not with us, since his life is bound up in the boy’s life,


I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan. You have been very pleasant to me. Your love to me was wonderful, surpassing the love of women.


David went out to meet them and said to them, “If y’all have come peaceably to me to help me, my heart will be united with y’all. But if y’all have come to betray me to my enemies, even though there is no wrong on my hands, may the God of our ancestors see this and rebuke it.”


Teach me your way, YHWH. I will walk in your truth. Make my heart undivided to fear your name.


A person of many friends may be ruined, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.


If your brother, the son of your mother, or your son, or your daughter, or the wife of your bosom, or your friend who is as your own soul, entices you secretly, saying, “Let’s go and serve other gods”—which you have not known, you, nor your ancestors;


that their hearts may be comforted, being knit together in love, and gaining all riches of the full assurance of understanding, that they may know the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ,


So all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, knit together as one man.


The people said to Saul, “Should Jonathan die, who has worked this great salvation in Israel? Far from it! As YHWH lives, there must not one hair of his head fall to the ground, for he has worked with God today!” So the people rescued Jonathan, and he did not die.


Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.


Saul spoke to Jonathan his son and to all his servants, that they should kill David. But Jonathan, Saul’s son, greatly delighted in David.


Jonathan told David, saying, “Saul my father seeks to kill you. Now therefore, please take care of yourself in the morning, live in a secret place, and hide yourself.


Jonathan caused David to swear again, for the love that he had to him; for he loved him as he loved his own soul.


Therefore deal kindly with your servant, for you have brought your servant into a covenant of YHWH with you; but if there is iniquity in me, kill me yourself, for why should you bring me to your father?”


Is that why all y’all have conspired against me. No one tells me when my son makes a treaty with the son of Jesse. And none of y’all feels sorry for me or discloses to me that my son has stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as it is today?”


They both made a covenant before YHWH. Then David stayed in the woods and Jonathan went to his house.
