41 Therefore Saul said, “YHWH, God of Israel, why have you not answered your servant today? If the unrighteousness is in me or my son Jonathan, then Lord God of Israel, give Urim. But if the men of Israel are at fault, give Thummim.” Jonathan and Saul were selected, and the men were cleared.

The lot settles disputes, and keeps strong ones apart.


The men said to each other, “Y’all come! Let’s cast lots to find out who is responsible for this evil upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.


They prayed and said, “You Lord, the heart-knower of all people, show us which one of these two you have chosen


They cast lots for them, and the lot fell to Matthias, so he was added to the eleven apostles.


Then he said to all Israel, “Y’all be on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side.” The people said to Saul, “Do what seems good to you.”


Saul said, “Y’all cast lots between me and Jonathan my son.” Jonathan was selected.
