But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, being small among the clans of Judah, out of you one will come out to me who is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings out are from of old, from ancient times.


but a whole month, until it comes out at y’all’s nostrils, and it is loathsome to y’all, because y’all have rejected YHWH who is among y’all, and have wept before him, saying, “Why did we leave Egypt?”’”


“You are to tell to the children of Israel to take staffs from them, one for each fathers’ house, of all their leaders according to their fathers’ houses, twelve rods. Write each man’s name on his staff.


When you have come to the land which YHWH your God gives you, and possess it and dwell in it, and say, “I will set a king over me, like all the nations that are around me,”


Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and called for the elders, heads, judges, and officers of Israel, and they presented themselves before God.


Gideon said to them, “I will not rule over y’all, neither will my son rule over y’all. YHWH will rule over y’all.”


So Samuel brought all the tribes of Israel near, and the tribe of Benjamin was chosen.


“When y’all saw that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon came against you*, y’all said to me, ‘No, a king must reign over us,’ when YHWH your* God was y’all’s king.


So YHWH saved Israel that day; and the battle passed over by Beth Aven.


Saul said, “Y’all come here, all leaders of the army. Y’all are to investigate and see how this sin happened today.


YHWH appeared again in Shiloh; for YHWH revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of YHWH.


The word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and encamped beside Ebenezer, and the Philistines encamped in Aphek.


But the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel, and they said, “No, but we will have a king over us,


They said to him, “See, you are old, and your sons don’t walk in your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.”
