Absalom set Amasa over the army instead of Joab. Now Amasa was the son of a man whose name was Ithra the Israelite, who went in to Abigail the daughter of Nahash, sister to Zeruiah, Joab’s mother.


The man said to Joab, “Even if I received a thousand pieces of silver in my hand, I wouldn’t lay my hand against the king’s son. For in our hearing the king commanded you and Abishai and Ittai, saying, ‘Y’all protect the young man Absalom for me.’


Then Joab said, “I’m not going to wait like this with you.” He took three darts in his hand and thrust them through Absalom’s heart while he was still alive in the middle of the oak.


The king commanded Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, “Deal gently for my sake with the young man Absalom.” All the people heard when the king commanded all the captains concerning Absalom.


Joab the son of Zeruiah and David’s servants went out, and met them by the pool of Gibeon; and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool and the other on the other side of the pool.


The three sons of Zeruiah were there: Joab, Abishai, and Asahel. Asahel was as light of foot as a wild gazelle.


But Amasa took no heed to the sword that was in Joab’s hand. So he struck him with it in the body and shed out his bowels to the ground, and didn’t strike him again; and he died. Joab and Abishai his brother pursued Sheba the son of Bichri.


When Abner had returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into the middle of the gate to speak with him quietly, and struck him there in the body, so that he died for the blood of Asahel his brother.


I am weak today, though anointed king. These men, the sons of Zeruiah are too hard for me. May YHWH reward the evildoer according to his wickedness.”


He conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar the priest, and they followed Adonijah and helped him.


YHWH will return his blood on his own head, because he fell on two men more righteous and better than he, and killed them with the sword, and my father David didn’t know it: Abner the son of Ner, captain of the army of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, captain of the army of Judah.


Also the blood of the souls of the innocent poor is found in your skirts. You didn’t find them breaking in, but it is because of all these things.


Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? No, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush. Therefore they will fall among those who fall. When I visit them, they will be cast down,” says YHWH.


Now John himself wore clothing made of camel hair and a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.


‘Cursed is anyone who secretly kills their neighbor.’ All the people will say, ‘Amen.’
