“Woe to you, Torah scholars and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but inside are full of dead men’s bones and everything unclean.


In the same way, you appear righteous to men on the outside, but are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.


All their works they do to be noticed by men. They make their tefillin wide and their tzitziyot long.


“Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.


“And whenever you fast, do not become sad-faced like the hypocrites, for they neglect their faces to make their fasting evident to men. Amen, I tell you, they have their reward in full!


So whenever you do tzadakah, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, so that they may be glorified by men. Amen, I tell you, they have their reward in full!


“When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Amen, I tell you, they have their reward in full!


But He said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves before the people, but God knows your hearts. For what is prized among men is detestable in God’s sight.”


They devour widows’ houses and make long prayers as a show. These men will receive greater condemnation!”


Whoever speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true and there is no unrighteousness in Him.


Now some men coming down from Judea were teaching the brothers, “Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.”


But some belonging to the party of the Pharisees who had believed stood up, saying, “It is necessary to circumcise them and to command them to keep the Torah of Moses.”


For we do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some of those who commend themselves. But when they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they have no understanding.


For such men are false emissaries, deceitful workers masquerading as Messiah’s emissaries.


But when I saw that they were not walking in line with the truth of the Good News, I said to Peter in front of everyone, “If you—being a Jew—live like the Gentiles and not like the Jews, how can you force the Gentiles to live like Jews?”


Yet not even Titus who was with me, a Greek, was forced to be circumcised.


As for me, brothers and sisters, if I still proclaim circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case, the stumbling block of the cross has been eliminated.


For not even the circumcised keep Torah themselves. Yet they want to have you circumcised so that they may boast about your flesh.


Some are proclaiming the Messiah out of envy and strife, but others out of good will.


looking out not only for your own interests but also for the interests of others.


For many walk who are enemies of the cross of Messiah—I have often told you about them, and now I am even weeping as I tell you.


Indeed, these are matters that have an appearance of wisdom in self-made religion and humility and self-denial of the body—yet none are of any value for stopping indulgence of the flesh.
