They spoke to him, saying: “If you will be a servant to this people today, serving them, granting them their petition, and speaking favorably to them, then they will be your servants forever.”


A psalm of Asaph. God takes His stand in the assembly of God. He judges among the ‘gods’:


“For I will go through the land of Egypt on that night and strike down every firstborn, both men and animals, and I will execute judgments against all the gods of Egypt. I am Adonai.


“If men fight, and hit a pregnant woman so that her child is born early, yet no harm follows, the one who hit her is to be strictly fined, according to what the woman’s husband demands of him. He must pay as the judges determine.


“But if the servant plainly states, ‘I love my master, my wife and my children, and I will not go out free,’


“If a man sells his daughter to be a maidservant, she is not to go free as the male servants do.


“Do not hold back the fullness of your crops or your vintage. You are to present the firstborn of your sons to Me.


I will restore your judges as at first, your counselors as at the start. Afterward you will be called City of Righteousness, Faithful City.


“Moreover, the land is not to be sold ­permanently, because the land is Mine. For you are sojourners with Me.


Let him stay with you as a hired worker or as a temporary resident. He will work for you until the Year of Jubilee,


Her princes within her are roaring lions. Her judges are wolves of the night, leaving nothing but bones for morning.


“I commanded your judges at that time saying: ‘Hear cases between your brothers, and judge fairly between a man and his brother or the outsider with him.

“Judges and officers you are to appoint within all your gates that Adonai your God is giving you, according to your tribes; and they are to judge the people with righteous judgment.


Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, “When the child is weaned, I will bring him, so he may appear before Adonai and stay there forever.”
