Now when Jacob saw Rachel (the daughter of Laban, his mother’s brother), Jacob stepped forward and rolled the stone away from the mouth of the well and watered the flock of Laban, his mother’s brother.


When the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning ritual at the threshing floor of the prickly bush, they said, “A solemn mourning ritual this is for the Egyptians.” That is why it is named Abel-Mizraim, which is on the other side of the Jordan.


When they came to Reuel their father, he said, “How come you’ve returned so soon today?”


“Where is he then?” he said to his daughters. “Why did you leave the man behind? Invite him to have some food to eat!”
