He says in his heart: “I’ll never be shaken! From generation to generation nothing bad will happen.”


I remember Your judgments from of old, Adonai, and comfort myself.

We have heard with our ears, O God —our fathers have told us— of a work You did in their days, in days of old.


“Will the Lord reject forever and never again show favor?


For He established a testimony in Jacob and ordained Torah in Israel, which He commanded our fathers to teach their children,


Now when it happens that your children ask you, ‘What does this ceremony mean to you?’


“So when your son asks you in times to come, ‘What is this?’ say to him, ‘By a strong hand Adonai brought us out from Egypt, the house of bondage,


Remember the former things of old: For I am God—there is no other. I am God, and there is none like Me—


Then His people remembered the days of old, the days of Moses: “Where is He who brought them through the sea with the shepherd of His flock? Where is He who put among them His Ruach ha-Kodesh?


“Indeed, ask now about the former days that were before you, from the day that God created man on the earth, and ask from one end of the sky to the other. Has there ever been such a great thing as this, or has anything like it been heard?


You are to remember all the way that Adonai your God has led you these 40 years in the wilderness—in order to humble you, to test you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His mitzvot or not.


But Gideon said to him, “O my lord, if Adonai is with us, then why has all this befallen us? So where are all His wonders that our fathers told us about saying ‘Didn’t Adonai bring us up from Egypt?’ But now Adonai has abandoned us and given us into the hand of Midian.”
