The former governors who were before me laid heavy burdens upon the people, and took from them food and wine, besides forty shekels of silver. Even their servants lorded it over the people. But I did not do so, because of the fear of God.


Moreover choose able men from all the people, such as fear God, men who are trustworthy and who hate a bribe; and place such men over the people as rulers of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.


He who is greedy for unjust gain makes trouble for his household, but he who hates bribes will live.


Woe to you, O land, when your king is a child, and your princes feast in the morning!
