Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler; and whoever is led astray by it is not wise.


He who loves pleasure will be a poor man; he who loves wine and oil will not be rich.


and put a knife to your throat if you are a man given to appetite.


He who keeps the law is a wise son, but a companion of gluttons shames his father.


and behold, joy and gladness, slaying oxen and killing sheep, eating flesh and drinking wine. “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.”


Woe to those who rise early in the morning, that they may run after strong drink, who tarry late into the evening till wine inflames them!


Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine, and valiant men in mixing strong drink,


and begins to beat his fellow servants, and eats and drinks with the drunken,


Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took his journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in loose living.


“There was a rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day.


“But take heed to yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a snare;


let us conduct ourselves becomingly as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy.


And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit,


and they shall say to the elders of his city, ‘This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard.’
