Thus says the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One, to one deeply despised, abhorred by the nations, the servant of rulers: “Kings shall see and arise; princes, and they shall prostrate themselves; because of the Lord, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.”


I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I hid not my face from shame and spitting.


As many were astonished at him — his appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance, and his form beyond that of the sons of men—


He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.


He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth.


Now you are walled about with a wall; siege is laid against us; with a rod they strike upon the cheek the ruler of Israel.


Then they spat in his face, and struck him; and some slapped him,


and they will mock him, and spit upon him, and scourge him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise.”


And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to strike him, saying to him, “Prophesy!” And the guards received him with blows.


And they struck his head with a reed, and spat upon him, and they knelt down in homage to him.
