Thus they became unclean by their acts, and played the harlot in their doings.


For lo, those who are far from thee shall perish; thou dost put an end to those who are false to thee.


They shall not dwell in your land, lest they make you sin against me; for if you serve their gods, it will surely be a snare to you.”


And he received the gold at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, and made a molten calf; and they said, “These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!”


and you take of their daughters for your sons, and their daughters play the harlot after their gods and make your sons play the harlot after their gods.


To the teaching and to the testimony! Surely for this word which they speak there is no dawn.


Their beautiful ornament they used for vainglory, and they made their abominable images and their detestable things of it; therefore I will make it an unclean thing to them.


“Plead with your mother, plead— for she is not my wife, and I am not her husband— that she put away her harlotry from her face, and her adultery from between her breasts;


For the children of Israel shall dwell many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or pillar, without ephod or teraphim.


But you shall seek the place which the Lord your God will choose out of all your tribes to put his name and make his habitation there; thither you shall go,


And you shall destroy all the peoples that the Lord your God will give over to you, your eye shall not pity them; neither shall you serve their gods, for that would be a snare to you.


The graven images of their gods you shall burn with fire; you shall not covet the silver or the gold that is on them, or take it for yourselves, lest you be ensnared by it; for it is an abomination to the Lord your God.


And the man Micah had a shrine, and he made an ephod and teraphim, and installed one of his sons, who became his priest.


Then the five men who had gone to spy out the country of Laish said to their brethren, “Do you know that in these houses there are an ephod, teraphim, a graven image, and a molten image? Now therefore consider what you will do.”


and the five men who had gone to spy out the land went up, and entered and took the graven image, the ephod, the teraphim, and the molten image, while the priest stood by the entrance of the gate with the six hundred men armed with weapons of war.


and you shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you shall break down their altars.’ But you have not obeyed my command. What is this you have done?


So now I say, I will not drive them out before you; but they shall become adversaries to you, and their gods shall be a snare to you.”


Now the angel of the Lord came and sat under the oak at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, as his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the wine press, to hide it from the Midianites.


Then Gideon built an altar there to the Lord, and called it, The Lord is peace. To this day it still stands at Ophrah, which belongs to the Abiezrites.


And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was one thousand seven hundred shekels of gold; besides the crescents and the pendants and the purple garments worn by the kings of Midian, and besides the collars that were about the necks of their camels.


So Midian was subdued before the people of Israel, and they lifted up their heads no more. And the land had rest forty years in the days of Gideon.
