And now what do you gain by going to Egypt, to drink the waters of the Nile? Or what do you gain by going to Assyria, to drink the waters of the Euphrates?


How lightly you gad about, changing your way! You shall be put to shame by Egypt as you were put to shame by Assyria.


Thus says the Lord: “What wrong did your fathers find in me that they went far from me, and went after worthlessness, and became worthless?


And you shall destroy all the peoples that the Lord your God will give over to you, your eye shall not pity them; neither shall you serve their gods, for that would be a snare to you.

But the men of Israel said to the Hivites, “Perhaps you live among us; then how can we make a covenant with you?”


For the time has come for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God?


So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel; and he said, “Because this people have transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not obeyed my voice,


and I said to you, ‘I am the Lord your God; you shall not pay reverence to the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell.’ But you have not given heed to my voice.”
