Stand by the way and watch, O inhabitant of Aroer! Ask him who flees and her who escapes; say, ‘What has happened?’


And when he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, he gave them their land as an inheritance, for about four hundred and fifty years.


‘Rise up, take your journey, and go over the valley of the Arnon; behold, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land; begin to take possession, and contend with him in battle.


From Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and from the city that is in the valley, as far as Gilead, there was not a city too high for us; the Lord our God gave all into our hands.


But the Lord said to me, ‘Do not fear him; for I have given him and all his people and his land into your hand; and you shall do to him as you did to Sihon the king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon.’


And we utterly destroyed them, as we did to Sihon the king of Heshbon, destroying every city, men, women, and children.


Joshua made war a long time with all those kings.


Sihon king of the Amorites who dwelt at Heshbon, and ruled from Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and from the middle of the valley as far as the river Jabbok, the boundary of the Ammonites, that is, half of Gilead,


and ruled over Mount Hermon and Salecah and all Bashan to the boundary of the Geshurites and the Ma-acathites, and over half of Gilead to the boundary of Sihon king of Heshbon.


and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, as far as the boundary of the Ammonites;


So their territory was from Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the tableland by Medeba;


with Heshbon, and all its cities that are in the tableland; Dibon, and Bamoth-baal, and Beth-baal-meon,


A long time afterward, when the Lord had given rest to Israel from all their enemies round about, and Joshua was old and well advanced in years,


and they crushed and oppressed the children of Israel that year. For eighteen years they oppressed all the people of Israel that were beyond the Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead.


So the land had rest forty years. Then Othni-el the son of Kenaz died.


So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest for eighty years.


“So perish all thine enemies, O Lord! But thy friends be like the sun as he rises in his might.” And the land had rest for forty years.


So Midian was subdued before the people of Israel, and they lifted up their heads no more. And the land had rest forty years in the days of Gideon.


Abimelech ruled over Israel three years.
