“If you set your heart aright, you will stretch out your hands toward him.


Are the consolations of God too small for you, or the word that deals gently with you?


He delivers the afflicted by their affliction, and opens their ear by adversity.


He also allured you out of distress into a broad place where there was no cramping, and what was set on your table was full of fatness.


If you will seek God and make supplication to the Almighty,


The Lord has chastened me sorely, but he has not given me over to death.


Blessed is the man whom thou dost chasten, O Lord, and whom thou dost teach out of thy law


I have heard Ephraim bemoaning, ‘Thou hast chastened me, and I was chastened, like an untrained calf; bring me back that I may be restored, for thou art the Lord my God.


Know then in your heart that, as a man disciplines his son, the Lord your God disciplines you.


Blessed is the man who endures trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life which God has promised to those who love him.


Behold, we call those happy who were steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.


Those whom I love, I reprove and chasten; so be zealous and repent.
