But when I looked for good, evil came; and when I waited for light, darkness came.


Upon all the bare heights in the desert destroyers have come; for the sword of the Lord devours from one end of the land to the other; no flesh has peace.


Hast thou utterly rejected Judah? Does thy soul loathe Zion? Why hast thou smitten us so that there is no healing for us? We looked for peace, but no good came; for a time of healing, but behold, terror.


Then I said, “Ah, Lord God, surely thou hast utterly deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying, ‘It shall be well with you’; whereas the sword has reached their very life.”


Go not forth into the field, nor walk on the road; for the enemy has a sword, terror is on every side.


They have healed the wound of my people lightly, saying, ‘Peace, peace,’ when there is no peace.


When anguish comes, they will seek peace, but there shall be none.


For the inhabitants of Maroth wait anxiously for good, because evil has come down from the Lord to the gate of Jerusalem.


When people say, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as travail comes upon a woman with child, and there will be no escape.
