Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.”


Though his height mount up to the heavens, and his head reach to the clouds,


Behold, I am stirring up the Medes against them, who have no regard for silver and do not delight in gold.


I stirred up one from the north, and he has come, from the rising of the sun, and he shall call on my name; he shall trample on rulers as on mortar, as the potter treads clay.


Sit in silence, and go into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans; for you shall no more be called the mistress of kingdoms.


You said, “I shall be mistress for ever,” so that you did not lay these things to heart or remember their end.


The horror you inspire has deceived you, and the pride of your heart, you who live in the clefts of the rock, who hold the height of the hill. Though you make your nest as high as the eagle's, I will bring you down from there, says the Lord.


“Go up against the land of Merathaim, and against the inhabitants of Pekod. Slay, and utterly destroy after them, says the Lord, and do all that I have commanded you.


The Lord has opened his armory, and brought out the weapons of his wrath, for the Lord God of hosts has a work to do in the land of the Chaldeans.


Therefore hear the plan which the Lord has made against Babylon, and the purposes which he has formed against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely the little ones of their flock shall be dragged away; surely their fold shall be appalled at their fate.


“Sharpen the arrows! Take up the shields! The Lord has stirred up the spirit of the kings of the Medes, because his purpose concerning Babylon is to destroy it, for that is the vengeance of the Lord, the vengeance for his temple.


“Behold, I am against you, O destroying mountain, says the Lord, which destroys the whole earth; I will stretch out my hand against you, and roll you down from the crags, and make you a burnt mountain.


Then the heavens and the earth, and all that is in them, shall sing for joy over Babylon; for the destroyers shall come against them out of the north, says the Lord.


for a destroyer has come upon her, upon Babylon; her warriors are taken, their bows are broken in pieces; for the Lord is a God of recompense, he will surely requite.


“Thus says the Lord of hosts: The broad wall of Babylon shall be leveled to the ground and her high gates shall be burned with fire. The peoples labor for naught, and the nations weary themselves only for fire.”


and the king said, “Is not this great Babylon, which I have built by my mighty power as a royal residence and for the glory of my majesty?”


“Though they dig into Sheol, from there shall my hand take them; though they climb up to heaven, from there I will bring them down.


And though they go into captivity before their enemies, there I will command the sword, and it shall slay them; and I will set my eyes upon them for evil and not for good.”


Woe to him who gets evil gain for his house, to set his nest on high, to be safe from the reach of harm!
