therefore, behold, I will again do marvelous things with this people, wonderful and marvelous; and the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the discernment of their discerning men shall be hid.”


who say to the seers, “See not”; and to the prophets, “Prophesy not to us what is right; speak to us smooth things, prophesy illusions,


Your first father sinned, and your mediators transgressed against me.


They know not, nor do they discern; for he has shut their eyes, so that they cannot see, and their minds, so that they cannot understand.


“In that day, says the Lord, courage shall fail both king and princes; the priests shall be appalled and the prophets astounded.”


They wandered, blind, through the streets, so defiled with blood that none could touch their garments.


And if the prophet be deceived and speak a word, I, the Lord, have deceived that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand against him, and will destroy him from the midst of my people Israel.


“Do not preach”—thus they preach— “one should not preach of such things; disgrace will not overtake us.”


And I said: Hear, you heads of Jacob and rulers of the house of Israel! Is it not for you to know justice?—


Therefore it shall be night to you, without vision, and darkness to you, without divination. The sun shall go down upon the prophets, and the day shall be black over them;


as it is written, “God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that should not see and ears that should not hear, down to this very day.”


In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the likeness of God.


So David took the spear and the jar of water from Saul's head; and they went away. No man saw it, or knew it, nor did any awake; for they were all asleep, because a deep sleep from the Lord had fallen upon them.


(Formerly in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, he said, “Come, let us go to the seer”; for he who is now called a prophet was formerly called a seer.)
