In his hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind.


“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which the Lord your God gives you.


The eye that mocks a father and scorns to obey a mother will be picked out by the ravens of the valley and eaten by the vultures.


and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.


O Lord, by these things men live, and in all these is the life of my spirit. Oh, restore me to health and make me live!


Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread forth the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it:


Woe to him who says to a father, ‘What are you begetting?’ or to a woman, ‘With what are you in travail?’ ”


For I will not contend for ever, nor will I always be angry; for from me proceeds the spirit, and I have made the breath of life.


Father and mother are treated with contempt in you; the sojourner suffers extortion in your midst; the fatherless and the widow are wronged in you.


Every one of you shall revere his mother and his father, and you shall keep my sabbaths: I am the Lord your God.


An Oracle The word of the Lord concerning Israel: Thus says the Lord, who stretched out the heavens and founded the earth and formed the spirit of man within him:


“A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If then I am a father, where is my honor? And if I am a master, where is my fear? says the Lord of hosts to you, O priests, who despise my name. You say, ‘How have we despised thy name?’


And they fell on their faces, and said, “O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and wilt thou be angry with all the congregation?”


“Let the Lord, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation,


He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor regarded man;


For a while he refused; but afterward he said to himself, ‘Though I neither fear God nor regard man,


That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.


Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants upon his throne,


the gospel concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh


For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brethren, my kinsmen by race.


to them belong the patriarchs, and of their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ. God who is over all be blessed for ever. Amen.


“ ‘Cursed be he who dishonors his father or his mother.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’


Humble yourselves before the Lord and he will exalt you.


Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.


Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that in due time he may exalt you.


And he said to me, “These words are trustworthy and true. And the Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, has sent his angel to show his servants what must soon take place.
