I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth; so that if one can count the dust of the earth, your descendants also can be counted.


For the sin of their mouths, the words of their lips, let them be trapped in their pride. For the cursing and lies which they utter,


If the Lord of hosts had not left us a few survivors, we should have been like Sodom, and become like Gomorrah.


The remnant of the trees of his forest will be so few that a child can write them down.


For though your people Israel be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will return. Destruction is decreed, overflowing with righteousness.


For thus it shall be in the midst of the earth among the nations, as when an olive tree is beaten, as at the gleaning when the vintage is done.


And though a tenth remain in it, it will be burned again, like a terebinth or an oak, whose stump remains standing when it is felled.” The holy seed is its stump.


For I am with you to save you, says the Lord; I will make a full end of all the nations among whom I scattered you, but of you I will not make a full end. I will chasten you in just measure, and I will by no means leave you unpunished.


For thus says the Lord, “The whole land shall be a desolation; yet I will not make a full end.


And they shall know that I am the Lord, when I disperse them among the nations and scatter them through the countries.


Moreover the word of the Lord came to me:


“For thus says the Lord God: How much more when I send upon Jerusalem my four sore acts of judgment, sword, famine, evil beasts, and pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast!


But when they came to the nations, wherever they came, they profaned my holy name, in that men said of them, ‘These are the people of the Lord, and yet they had to go out of his land.’


Then you will remember your evil ways, and your deeds that were not good; and you will loathe yourselves for your iniquities and your abominable deeds.


The sword is without, pestilence and famine are within; he that is in the field dies by the sword; and him that is in the city famine and pestilence devour.


And if those days had not been shortened, no human being would be saved; but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened.


For the gate is narrow and the way is hard, that leads to life, and those who find it are few.


And Isaiah cries out concerning Israel: “Though the number of the sons of Israel be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will be saved;
