When they were few in number, and of little account, and sojourners in it,


When they were few in number, of little account, and sojourners in it,


O offspring of Abraham his servant, sons of Jacob, his chosen ones!


Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to thy name give glory, for the sake of thy steadfast love and thy faithfulness!


for not by their own sword did they win the land, nor did their own arm give them victory; but thy right hand, and thy arm, and the light of thy countenance; for thou didst delight in them.


Look to Abraham your father and to Sarah who bore you; for when he was but one I called him, and I blessed him and made him many.


In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them; in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.


and say to them, Thus says the Lord God: On the day when I chose Israel, I swore to the seed of the house of Jacob, making myself known to them in the land of Egypt, I swore to them, saying, I am the Lord your God.


“Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations to which you came.


For the gate is narrow and the way is hard, that leads to life, and those who find it are few.


“Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.


But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.


So then he has mercy upon whomever he wills, and he hardens the heart of whomever he wills.


Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for beauty and another for menial use?


the Lord your God has multiplied you, and behold, you are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude.


Your fathers went down to Egypt seventy persons; and now the Lord your God has made you as the stars of heaven for multitude.


For you are a people holy to the Lord your God, and the Lord has chosen you to be a people for his own possession, out of all the peoples that are on the face of the earth.


And because he loved your fathers and chose their descendants after them, and brought you out of Egypt with his own presence, by his great power,


See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.


In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the expiation for our sins.
