So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, saying, “For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life is preserved.”


The sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel, limping because of his thigh.


And as the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him in thunder.


And the Lord said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the people of Israel: ‘You have seen for yourselves that I have talked with you from heaven.


But,” he said, “you cannot see my face; for man shall not see me and live.”


and they will tell the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that thou, O Lord, art in the midst of this people; for thou, O Lord, art seen face to face, and thy cloud stands over them and thou goest before them, in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night.


For I will proclaim the name of the Lord. Ascribe greatness to our God!


Did any people ever hear the voice of a god speaking out of the midst of the fire, as you have heard, and still live?


And when you heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, you came near to me, all the heads of your tribes, and your elders;


Now therefore why should we die? For this great fire will consume us; if we hear the voice of the Lord our God any more, we shall die.


And Manoah said to his wife, “We shall surely die, for we have seen God.”
