So they took two mounted men, and the king sent them after the army of the Syrians, saying, “Go and see.”


Then the people went out, and plundered the camp of the Syrians. So a measure of fine meal was sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, according to the word of the Lord.


Drinks were served in golden goblets, goblets of different kinds, and the royal wine was lavished according to the bounty of the king.


Then Satan answered the Lord, “Skin for skin! All that a man has he will give for his life.


a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;


What will you do on the day of punishment, in the storm which will come from afar? To whom will you flee for help, and where will you leave your wealth?


In that day men will cast forth their idols of silver and their idols of gold, which they made for themselves to worship, to the moles and to the bats,


And they will hang on him the whole weight of his father's house, the offspring and issue, every small vessel, from the cups to all the flagons.


For in that day every one shall cast away his idols of silver and his idols of gold, which your hands have sinfully made for you.


Cast away from you all the transgressions which you have committed against me, and get yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! Why will you die, O house of Israel?


For what will it profit a man, if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life? Or what shall a man give in return for his life?


Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us,
