2 Kings 17:34 - Revised Standard Version

34 To this day they do according to the former manner. They do not fear the Lord, and they do not follow the statutes or the ordinances or the law or the commandment which the Lord commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel.

Then he said, “Your name shall no more be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed.”


Then Jacob asked him, “Tell me, I pray, your name.” But he said, “Why is it that you ask my name?” And there he blessed him.


There he erected an altar and called it El-Elohe-Israel.


And God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; no longer shall your name be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name.” So his name was called Israel.


And he said to Jeroboam, “Take for yourself ten pieces; for thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Behold, I am about to tear the kingdom from the hand of Solomon, and will give you ten tribes


And now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, “Behold, Elijah is here.” ’


Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord came, saying, “Israel shall be your name”;


And at the beginning of their dwelling there, they did not fear the Lord; therefore the Lord sent lions among them, which killed some of them.


So they feared the Lord but also served their own gods, after the manner of the nations from among whom they had been carried away.


However they would not listen, but they did according to their former manner.


My companion stretched out his hand against his friends, he violated his covenant.


He who walks in uprightness fears the Lord, but he who is devious in his ways despises him.


Hear this, O house of Jacob, who are called by the name of Israel, and who came forth from the loins of Judah; who swear by the name of the Lord, and confess the God of Israel, but not in truth or right.
