2 Kings 17:15 - Revised Standard Version

15 They despised his statutes, and his covenant that he made with their fathers, and the warnings which he gave them. They went after false idols, and became false, and they followed the nations that were round about them, concerning whom the Lord had commanded them that they should not do like them.

Therefore the Lord said to Solomon, “Since this has been your mind and you have not kept my covenant and my statutes which I have commanded you, I will surely tear the kingdom from you and will give it to your servant.


for all the sins of Baasha and the sins of Elah his son which they sinned, and which they made Israel to sin, provoking the Lord God of Israel to anger with their idols.


and walked in the customs of the nations whom the Lord drove out before the people of Israel, and in the customs which the kings of Israel had introduced.


Yet he sent prophets among them to bring them back to the Lord; these testified against them, but they would not give heed.


He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, according to the abominable practices of the nations whom the Lord drove out before the people of Israel.


Manasseh seduced Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that they did more evil than the nations whom the Lord destroyed before the people of Israel.


“Nevertheless they were disobedient and rebelled against thee and cast thy law behind their back and killed thy prophets, who had warned them in order to turn them back to thee, and they committed great blasphemies.


Those who make them are like them; so are all who trust in them.


They did not keep God's covenant, but refused to walk according to his law.


And the Lord said to Moses, “How long do you refuse to keep my commandments and my laws?


They are worthless, a work of delusion; at the time of their punishment they shall perish.


They are both stupid and foolish; the instruction of idols is but wood!


Thus says the Lord: “What wrong did your fathers find in me that they went far from me, and went after worthlessness, and became worthless?


not like the covenant which I made with their fathers when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant which they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord.


The Lord could no longer bear your evil doings and the abominations which you committed; therefore your land has become a desolation and a waste and a curse, without inhabitant, as it is this day.


It is because you burned incense, and because you sinned against the Lord and did not obey the voice of the Lord or walk in his law and in his statutes and in his testimonies, that this evil has befallen you, as at this day.”


Yet I persistently sent to you all my servants the prophets, saying, ‘Oh, do not do this abominable thing that I hate!’


Why do you provoke me to anger with the works of your hands, burning incense to other gods in the land of Egypt where you have come to live, that you may be cut off and become a curse and a taunt among all the nations of the earth?


yet they did not listen to me, or incline their ear, but stiffened their neck. They did worse than their fathers.


The wise men shall be put to shame, they shall be dismayed and taken; lo, they have rejected the word of the Lord, and what wisdom is in them?


“Son of man, you dwell in the midst of a rebellious house, who have eyes to see, but see not, who have ears to hear, but hear not;


And he said to me, “Son of man, I send you to the people of Israel, to a nation of rebels, who have rebelled against me; they and their fathers have transgressed against me to this very day.


if you spurn my statutes, and if your soul abhors my ordinances, so that you will not do all my commandments, but break my covenant,


Those who pay regard to vain idols forsake their true loyalty.


He said to them, “Now draw some out, and take it to the steward of the feast.” So they took it.


Hence, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that “an idol has no real existence,” and that “there is no God but one.”


There shall not be found among you any one who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, any one who practices divination, a soothsayer, or an augur, or a sorcerer,


yea, all the nations would say, ‘Why has the Lord done thus to this land? What means the heat of this great anger?’


They have stirred me to jealousy with what is no god; they have provoked me with their idols. So I will stir them to jealousy with those who are no people; I will provoke them with a foolish nation.


For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges.


and do not turn aside after vain things which cannot profit or save, for they are vain.
