He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?”


Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons.


And he will give Israel up because of the sins of Jeroboam, which he sinned and which he made Israel to sin.”


And he answered, “I have not troubled Israel; but you have, and your father's house, because you have forsaken the commandments of the Lord and followed the Baals.


He had brothers, the sons of Jehoshaphat: Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Azariah, Michael, and Shephatiah; all these were the sons of Jehoshaphat king of Judah.


Ahaz was twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. And he did not do what was right in the eyes of the Lord, like his father David,


And he sacrificed and burned incense on the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree.


Manasseh seduced Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that they did more evil than the nations whom the Lord destroyed before the people of Israel.


Look on every one that is proud, and bring him low; and tread down the wicked where they stand.


And when Moses saw that the people had broken loose (for Aaron had let them break loose, to their shame among their enemies),


Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.


A man's pride will bring him low, but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor.


Ephraim is oppressed, crushed in judgment, because he was determined to go after vanity.


It is a guilt offering; he is guilty before the Lord.”


For you have kept the statutes of Omri, and all the works of the house of Ahab; and you have walked in their counsels; that I may make you a desolation, and your inhabitants a hissing; so you shall bear the scorn of the peoples.”


The sojourner who is among you shall mount above you higher and higher; and you shall come down lower and lower.


(“Lo, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is he who is awake, keeping his garments that he may not go naked and be seen exposed!”)


The Lord makes poor and makes rich; he brings low, he also exalts.
