Certain chiefs also of the men of Ephraim, Azariah the son of Johanan, Berechiah the son of Meshillemoth, Jehizkiah the son of Shallum, and Amasa the son of Hadlai, stood up against those who were coming from the war,


The men of Israel took captive two hundred thousand of their kinsfolk, women, sons, and daughters; they also took much spoil from them and brought the spoil to Samaria.


Let our officials stand for the whole assembly; let all in our cities who have taken foreign wives come at appointed times, and with them the elders and judges of every city, till the fierce wrath of our God over this matter be averted from us.”


Thy wrath has swept over me; thy dread assaults destroy me.


“Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke?


“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.


For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get.


For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy; yet mercy triumphs over judgment.
