The dogs have a mighty appetite; they never have enough. The shepherds also have no understanding; they have all turned to their own way, each to his own gain, one and all.


“For from the least to the greatest of them, every one is greedy for unjust gain; and from prophet to priest, every one deals falsely.


Therefore I will give their wives to others and their fields to conquerors, because from the least to the greatest every one is greedy for unjust gain; from prophet to priest every one deals falsely.


And they come to you as people come, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear what you say but they will not do it; for with their lips they show much love, but their heart is set on their gain.


“Either make the tree good, and its fruit good; or make the tree bad, and its fruit bad; for the tree is known by its fruit.


He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer’; but you make it a den of robbers.”


“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you shut the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither enter yourselves, nor allow those who would enter to go in.


If any one is disposed to be contentious, we recognize no other practice, nor do the churches of God.


Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is living in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us.


Certain persons by swerving from these have wandered away into vain discussion,


no drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, and no lover of money.


Deacons likewise must be serious, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for gain;


Have nothing to do with godless and silly myths. Train yourself in godliness;


for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.


There is great gain in godliness with contentment;


holding the form of religion but denying the power of it. Avoid such people.


As Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men of corrupt mind and counterfeit faith;


they must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for base gain what they have no right to teach.


Forsaking the right way they have gone astray; they have followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved gain from wrongdoing,


And in their greed they will exploit you with false words; from of old their condemnation has not been idle, and their destruction has not been asleep.


Woe to them! For they walk in the way of Cain, and abandon themselves for the sake of gain to Balaam's error, and perish in Korah's rebellion.
