I also will choose affliction for them, and bring their fears upon them; because, when I called, no one answered, when I spoke they did not listen; but they did what was evil in my eyes, and chose that in which I did not delight.”


‘At the end of six years each of you must set free the fellow Hebrew who has been sold to you and has served you six years; you must set him free from your service.’ But your fathers did not listen to me or incline their ears to me.


And he said to me, “Son of man, I send you to the people of Israel, to a nation of rebels, who have rebelled against me; they and their fathers have transgressed against me to this very day.


But the house of Israel will not listen to you; for they are not willing to listen to me; because all the house of Israel are of a hard forehead and of a stubborn heart.


And God came to Balaam at night and said to him, “If the men have come to call you, rise, go with them; but only what I bid you, that shall you do.”


“He who receives you receives me, and he who receives me receives him who sent me.


“He who hears you hears me, and he who rejects you rejects me, and he who rejects me rejects him who sent me.”


But his citizens hated him and sent an embassy after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’


But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slay them before me.’ ”


Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him.


Gideon said to them, “I will not rule over you, and my son will not rule over you; the Lord will rule over you.”


But you have this day rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses; and you have said, ‘No! but set a king over us.’ Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and by your thousands.”


And Samuel said to all Israel, “Behold, I have hearkened to your voice in all that you have said to me, and have made a king over you.


And when you saw that Nahash the king of the Ammonites came against you, you said to me, ‘No, but a king shall reign over us,’ when the Lord your God was your king.


And the Lord said to Samuel, “Hearken to their voice, and make them a king.” Samuel then said to the men of Israel, “Go every man to his city.”


According to all the deeds which they have done to me, from the day I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are also doing to you.
