He conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar the priest; and they followed Adonijah and helped him.


David said, “Whoever shall smite the Jebusites first shall be chief and commander.” And Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, so he became chief.


And Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the army; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder;


The third commander, for the third month, was Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada the priest, as chief; in his division were twenty-four thousand.
