And he built altars in the house of the Lord, of which the Lord had said, “In Jerusalem will I put my name.”


And the graven image of Asherah that he had made he set in the house of which the Lord said to David and to Solomon his son, “In this house, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will put my name for ever;


to prepare timber for me in abundance, for the house I am to build will be great and wonderful.


All the leading priests and the people likewise were exceedingly unfaithful, following all the abominations of the nations; and they polluted the house of the Lord which he had hallowed in Jerusalem.


But many of the priests and Levites and heads of fathers' houses, old men who had seen the first house, wept with a loud voice when they saw the foundation of this house being laid, though many shouted aloud for joy;


beautiful in elevation, is the joy of all the earth, Mount Zion, in the far north, the city of the great King.


Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth.


Then you will defile your silver-covered graven images and your gold-plated molten images. You will scatter them as unclean things; you will say to them, “Begone!”


Our holy and beautiful house, where our fathers praised thee, has been burned by fire, and all our pleasant places have become ruins.


therefore I will do to the house which is called by my name, and in which you trust, and to the place which I gave to you and to your fathers, as I did to Shiloh.


“For the sons of Judah have done evil in my sight, says the Lord; they have set their abominations in the house which is called by my name, to defile it.

And when they come there, they will remove from it all its detestable things and all its abominations.


You took some of your garments, and made for yourself gaily decked shrines, and on them played the harlot; the like has never been, nor ever shall be.


Also my bread which I gave you—I fed you with fine flour and oil and honey—you set before them for a pleasing odor, says the Lord God.


Moreover this they have done to me: they have defiled my sanctuary on the same day and profaned my sabbaths.


‘Say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will profane my sanctuary, the pride of your power, the delight of your eyes, and the desire of your soul; and your sons and your daughters whom you left behind shall fall by the sword.


Wherefore, as I live, says the Lord God, surely, because you have defiled my sanctuary with all your detestable things and with all your abominations, therefore I will cut you down; my eye will not spare, and I will have no pity.


I will turn my face from them, that they may profane my precious place; robbers shall enter and profane it,


Then he said to them, “Defile the house, and fill the courts with the slain. Go forth.” So they went forth, and smote in the city.


‘Who is left among you that saw this house in its former glory? How do you see it now? Is it not in your sight as nothing?


And Gideon said to them, “Let me make a request of you; give me every man of you the earrings of his spoil.” (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.)


And Gideon made an ephod of it and put it in his city, in Ophrah; and all Israel played the harlot after it there, and it became a snare to Gideon and to his family.
