But the man said to Joab, “Even if I felt in my hand the weight of a thousand pieces of silver, I would not raise my hand against the king's son; for in our hearing the king commanded you and Abishai and Ittai, saying: For my sake protect the young man Absalom!


Then the people of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. When they told David, “It was the people of Jabesh-gilead who buried Saul,”


So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron; and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel.


To this day they continue to practice their former customs. They do not worship the Lord and they do not follow the statutes or the ordinances or the law or the commandment that the Lord commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel.


So they reward me evil for good, and hatred for my love.


All my enemies shall be ashamed and struck with terror; they shall turn back, and in a moment be put to shame.


if I have repaid my ally with harm or plundered my foe without cause,


Forever I will keep my steadfast love for him, and my covenant with him will stand firm.


I will not violate my covenant, or alter the word that went forth from my lips.


But now you have spurned and rejected him; you are full of wrath against your anointed.


your throne is established from of old; you are from everlasting.


Keep the king's command because of your sacred oath.


O Lord, do your eyes not look for truth? You have struck them, but they felt no anguish; you have consumed them, but they refused to take correction. They have made their faces harder than rock; they have refused to turn back.


About that time King Herod laid violent hands upon some who belonged to the church.


The king said to the guard who stood around him, “Turn and kill the priests of the Lord, because their hand also is with David; they knew that he fled, and did not disclose it to me.” But the servants of the king would not raise their hand to attack the priests of the Lord.


This very day your eyes have seen how the Lord gave you into my hand in the cave; and some urged me to kill you, but I spared you. I said, ‘I will not raise my hand against my lord; for he is the Lord's anointed.’
