But Sarah denied, saying, “I did not laugh”; for she was afraid. He said, “Oh yes, you did laugh.”


He answered, “I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it away.”


You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away.


You have made us like sheep for slaughter, and have scattered us among the nations.


The Lord knows our thoughts, that they are but an empty breath.


He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.


I the Lord test the mind and search the heart, to give to all according to their ways, according to the fruit of their doings.


But they will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me.


As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all day long; we are accounted as sheep to be slaughtered.”


For I think that God has exhibited us apostles as last of all, as though sentenced to death, because we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels and to mortals.
