Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew, and he ate and drank, and rose and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.


I thought how I would set you among my children, and give you a pleasant land, the most beautiful heritage of all the nations. And I thought you would call me, My Father, and would not turn from following me.


On that day I swore to them that I would bring them out of the land of Egypt into a land that I had searched out for them, a land flowing with milk and honey, the most glorious of all lands.


So they brought to the Israelites an unfavorable report of the land that they had spied out, saying, “The land that we have gone through as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants; and all the people that we saw in it are of great size.


And the Lord said to Moses, “How long will this people despise me? And how long will they refuse to believe in me, in spite of all the signs that I have done among them?


And all the Israelites complained against Moses and Aaron; the whole congregation said to them, “Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness!


But your little ones, who you said would become booty, I will bring in, and they shall know the land that you have despised.


Only, do not rebel against the Lord; and do not fear the people of the land, for they are no more than bread for us; their protection is removed from them, and the Lord is with us; do not fear them.”


But they made light of it and went away, one to his farm, another to his business,


But you were unwilling to go up. You rebelled against the command of the Lord your God;


But in spite of this, you have no trust in the Lord your God,


And when the Lord sent you from Kadesh-barnea, saying, “Go up and occupy the land that I have given you,” you rebelled against the command of the Lord your God, neither trusting him nor obeying him.


See to it that no one becomes like Esau, an immoral and godless person, who sold his birthright for a single meal.


Take care, brothers and sisters, that none of you may have an evil, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.


Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession.


For indeed the good news came to us just as to them; but the message they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened.


Since therefore it remains open for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience,


Now I desire to remind you, though you are fully informed, that the Lord, who once for all saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe.
