And one of the sons of Jehoiada, son of the high priest Eliashib, was the son-in-law of Sanballat the Horonite; I chased him away from me.


When Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite official heard this, it displeased them greatly that someone had come to seek the welfare of the people of Israel.


Now when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he was angry and greatly enraged, and he mocked the Jews.


In it was written, “It is reported among the nations—and Geshem also says it—that you and the Jews intend to rebel; that is why you are building the wall; and according to this report you wish to become their king.


—for they all wanted to frighten us, thinking, “Their hands will drop from the work, and it will not be done.” But now, O God, strengthen my hands.


“But now they make sport of me, those who are younger than I, whose fathers I would have disdained to set with the dogs of my flock.


Our soul has had more than its fill of the scorn of those who are at ease, of the contempt of the proud.


We have become a taunt to our neighbors, mocked and derided by those around us.


You make us the scorn of our neighbors; our enemies laugh among themselves.


Restore us, O God of hosts; let your face shine, that we may be saved.


Do you think that mere words are strategy and power for war? On whom do you now rely, that you have rebelled against me?


For whenever I speak, I must cry out, I must shout, “Violence and destruction!” For the word of the Lord has become for me a reproach and derision all day long.


Then Ishmael took captive all the rest of the people who were in Mizpah, the king's daughters and all the people who were left at Mizpah, whom Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, had committed to Gedaliah son of Ahikam. They began to accuse him, saying, “We found this man perverting our nation, forbidding us to pay taxes to the emperor, and saying that he himself is the Messiah, a king.”


From then on Pilate tried to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are no friend of the emperor. Everyone who claims to be a king sets himself against the emperor.”


We have, in fact, found this man a pestilent fellow, an agitator among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes.


Others suffered mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment.
