when your ancestors tested me, and put me to the proof, though they had seen my work.


The Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test Jesus they asked him to show them a sign from heaven.


But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites?


So they watched him and sent spies who pretended to be honest, in order to trap him by what he said, so as to hand him over to the jurisdiction and authority of the governor.


Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?”


“Show me a denarius. Whose head and whose title does it bear?” They said, “The emperor's.”


When Jesus perceived their questionings, he answered them, “Why do you raise such questions in your hearts?


Even though he knew what they were thinking, he said to the man who had the withered hand, “Come and stand here.” He got up and stood there.


and said, “You son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, full of all deceit and villainy, will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord?


We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did, and were destroyed by serpents.


For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness,”


We must no longer be children, tossed to and fro and blown about by every wind of doctrine, by people's trickery, by their craftiness in deceitful scheming.


And before him no creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we must render an account.
