He said, “Come with me, and see my zeal for the Lord.” So he had him ride in his chariot.


When you stretch out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; even though you make many prayers, I will not listen; your hands are full of blood.


Will anyone rob God? Yet you are robbing me! But you say, “How are we robbing you?” In your tithes and offerings!


because I have given to the Levites as their portion the tithe of the Israelites, which they set apart as an offering to the Lord. Therefore I have said of them that they shall have no allotment among the Israelites.


Then God met Balaam; and Balaam said to him, “I have arranged the seven altars, and have offered a bull and a ram on each altar.”


For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.


“Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them; for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven.


“And whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.


“And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.


Then the disciples of John came to him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”


“But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and herbs of all kinds, and neglect justice and the love of God; it is these you ought to have practiced, without neglecting the others.


So you also, when you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, ‘We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done!’ ”


Then what becomes of boasting? It is excluded. By what law? By that of works? No, but by the law of faith.
