After these things God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”


But he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I shall come out like gold.


A king is not saved by his great army; a warrior is not delivered by his great strength.


For you, O God, have tested us; you have tried us as silver is tried.


O let the evil of the wicked come to an end, but establish the righteous, you who test the minds and hearts, O righteous God.


So he brought the troops down to the water; and the Lord said to Gideon, “All those who lap the water with their tongues, as a dog laps, you shall put to one side; all those who kneel down to drink, putting their hands to their mouths, you shall put to the other side.”


Jonathan said to the young man who carried his armor, “Come, let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised; it may be that the Lord will act for us; for nothing can hinder the Lord from saving by many or by few.”


But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
