David said to the messenger, “Thus you shall say to Joab, ‘Do not let this matter trouble you, for the sword devours now one and now another; press your attack on the city, and overthrow it.’ And encourage him.”


They hold fast to their evil purpose; they talk of laying snares secretly, thinking, “Who can see us?


On that day the Benjaminites mustered twenty-six thousand armed men from their towns, besides the inhabitants of Gibeah.


And the Israelites, apart from Benjamin, mustered four hundred thousand armed men, all of them warriors.


The Benjaminites came out of Gibeah, and struck down on that day twenty-two thousand of the Israelites.


(22) The Israelites took courage, and again formed the battle line in the same place where they had formed it on the first day.


David was in great danger; for the people spoke of stoning him, because all the people were bitter in spirit for their sons and daughters. But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God.
