He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.


But Jesus was silent. Then the high priest said to him, “I put you under oath before the living God, tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”


Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the governor's headquarters, and they gathered the whole cohort around him.


He questioned him at some length, but Jesus gave him no answer.


Then they took Jesus from Caiaphas to Pilate's headquarters. It was early in the morning. They themselves did not enter the headquarters, so as to avoid ritual defilement and to be able to eat the Passover.


Then Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”


Jesus answered, “Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me?”


Pilate asked him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.”


Pilate therefore said to him, “Do you refuse to speak to me? Do you not know that I have power to release you, and power to crucify you?”


Now when Pilate heard this, he was more afraid than ever.


Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid because I know where I have come from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going.


and are in no way intimidated by your opponents. For them this is evidence of their destruction, but of your salvation. And this is God's doing.


Then the woman came and told her husband, “A man of God came to me, and his appearance was like that of an angel of God, most awe-inspiring; I did not ask him where he came from, and he did not tell me his name;
