He takes the wise in their own craftiness; and the schemes of the wily are brought to a quick end.


But there is forgiveness with you, so that you may be revered.


Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.


Happy are those who make the Lord their trust, who do not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after false gods.


Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to the skillful; but time and chance happen to them all.


Ah, you who are wise in your own eyes, and shrewd in your own sight!


I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear me for all time, for their own good and the good of their children after them.


And this city shall be to me a name of joy, a praise and a glory before all the nations of the earth who shall hear of all the good that I do for them; they shall fear and tremble because of all the good and all the prosperity I provide for it.


Do you not fear me? says the Lord; Do you not tremble before me? I placed the sand as a boundary for the sea, a perpetual barrier that it cannot pass; though the waves toss, they cannot prevail, though they roar, they cannot pass over it.


Afterward the Israelites shall return and seek the Lord their God, and David their king; they shall come in awe to the Lord and to his goodness in the latter days.


Then the men feared the Lord even more, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows.


Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.


At that same hour Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.


Or do you despise the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience? Do you not realize that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?


Consider your own call, brothers and sisters: not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth.


For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness,”
