and said to them, “You shall not bring the captives in here, for you propose to bring on us guilt against the Lord in addition to our present sins and guilt. For our guilt is already great, and there is fierce wrath against Israel.”


In the time of his distress he became yet more faithless to the Lord—this same King Ahaz.


Why does your heart carry you away, and why do your eyes flash,


But you are doing away with the fear of God, and hindering meditation before God.


But if they do not listen, they shall perish by the sword, and die without knowledge.


They die in their youth, and their life ends in shame.


And if they are bound in fetters and caught in the cords of affliction,


which I have reserved for the time of trouble, for the day of battle and war?


Some sat in darkness and in gloom, prisoners in misery and in irons,


Just as it is written in the law of Moses, all this calamity has come upon us. We did not entreat the favor of the Lord our God, turning from our iniquities and reflecting on his fidelity.


And now you, a brood of sinners, have risen in place of your fathers, to increase the Lord's fierce anger against Israel!


But by your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath, when God's righteous judgment will be revealed.
