There is no gloom or deep darkness where evildoers may hide themselves.


They think in their heart, “God has forgotten, he has hidden his face, he will never see it.”


If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light around me become night,”


Where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence?


There they are, bellowing with their mouths, with sharp words on their lips— for “Who,” they think, “will hear us?”


They hold fast to their evil purpose; they talk of laying snares secretly, thinking, “Who can see us?


And they say, “How can God know? Is there knowledge in the Most High?”


Ha! You who hide a plan too deep for the Lord, whose deeds are in the dark, and who say, “Who sees us? Who knows us?”


Who can hide in secret places so that I cannot see them? says the Lord. Do I not fill heaven and earth? says the Lord.


Then he said to me, “Mortal, have you seen what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the dark, each in his room of images? For they say, ‘The Lord does not see us, the Lord has forsaken the land.’ ”


He said to me, “The guilt of the house of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great; the land is full of bloodshed and the city full of perversity; for they say, ‘The Lord has forsaken the land, and the Lord does not see.’


Though they dig into Sheol, from there shall my hand take them; though they climb up to heaven, from there I will bring them down.


Though they hide themselves on the top of Carmel, from there I will search out and take them; and though they hide from my sight at the bottom of the sea, there I will command the sea-serpent, and it shall bite them.


At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps, and I will punish the people who rest complacently on their dregs, those who say in their hearts, “The Lord will not do good, nor will he do harm.”
