I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.”


Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel.


I have seen your abominations, your adulteries and neighings, your shameless prostitutions on the hills of the countryside. Woe to you, O Jerusalem! How long will it be before you are made clean?


Although our iniquities testify against us, act, O Lord, for your name's sake; our apostasies indeed are many, and we have sinned against you.


What then do you gain by going to Egypt, to drink the waters of the Nile? Or what do you gain by going to Assyria, to drink the waters of the Euphrates?


How can you say, “I am not defiled, I have not gone after the Baals”? Look at your way in the valley; know what you have done— a restive young camel interlacing her tracks,


How lightly you gad about, changing your ways! You shall be put to shame by Egypt as you were put to shame by Assyria.


If a man divorces his wife and she goes from him and becomes another man's wife, will he return to her? Would not such a land be greatly polluted? You have played the whore with many lovers; and would you return to me? says the Lord.


Return, O faithless children, says the Lord, for I am your master; I will take you, one from a city and two from a family, and I will bring you to Zion.


Return, O faithless children, I will heal your faithlessness. “Here we come to you; for you are the Lord our God.


Have you not just now called to me, “My Father, you are the friend of my youth—


The Lord said to me in the days of King Josiah: Have you seen what she did, that faithless one, Israel, how she went up on every high hill and under every green tree, and played the whore there?


She saw that for all the adulteries of that faithless one, Israel, I had sent her away with a decree of divorce; yet her false sister Judah did not fear, but she too went and played the whore.


O Jerusalem, wash your heart clean of wickedness so that you may be saved. How long shall your evil schemes lodge within you?


Why do you boast in your strength? Your strength is ebbing, O faithless daughter. You trusted in your treasures, saying, “Who will attack me?”


Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, but, in the stubbornness of their evil will, they walked in their own counsels, and looked backward rather than forward.


My people are bent on turning away from me. To the Most High they call, but he does not raise them up at all.


I will heal their disloyalty; I will love them freely, for my anger has turned from them.


Like a stubborn heifer, Israel is stubborn; can the Lord now feed them like a lamb in a broad pasture?


Your calf is rejected, O Samaria. My anger burns against them. How long will they be incapable of innocence?


But they refused to listen, and turned a stubborn shoulder, and stopped their ears in order not to hear.


But if the Lord creates something new, and the ground opens its mouth and swallows them up, with all that belongs to them, and they go down alive into Sheol, then you shall know that these men have despised the Lord.”


She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
