King Ahaz commanded the priest Uriah, saying, “Upon the great altar offer the morning burnt offering, and the evening grain offering, and the king's burnt offering, and his grain offering, with the burnt offering of all the people of the land, their grain offering, and their drink offering; then dash against it all the blood of the burnt offering, and all the blood of the sacrifice; but the bronze altar shall be for me to inquire by.”


In the time of his distress he became yet more faithless to the Lord—this same King Ahaz.


Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven.


Then Isaiah said: “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary mortals, that you weary my God also?


They come to you as people come, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear your words, but they will not obey them. For flattery is on their lips, but their heart is set on their gain.


Now we count the arrogant happy; evildoers not only prosper, but when they put God to the test they escape.”


Then Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together to put the Spirit of the Lord to the test? Look, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.”


We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did, and were destroyed by serpents.


Do not put the Lord your God to the test, as you tested him at Massah.
