God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name.


No longer shall your name be Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you the ancestor of a multitude of nations.


Then Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” But he said, “Why is it that you ask my name?” And there he blessed him.


Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord came, saying, “Israel shall be your name”;


To this day they continue to practice their former customs. They do not worship the Lord and they do not follow the statutes or the ordinances or the law or the commandment that the Lord commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel.


He strove with the angel and prevailed, he wept and sought his favor; he met him at Bethel, and there he spoke with him.
