1 God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel, and settle there. Make an altar there to the God who appeared to you when you fled from your brother Esau.”

From there he moved on to the hill country on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; and there he built an altar to the Lord and invoked the name of the Lord.


And he said, “Hagar, slave-girl of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?” She said, “I am running away from my mistress Sarai.”


So Abraham called that place “The Lord will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”


Then Jacob went on his journey, and came to the land of the people of the east.


I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed a pillar and made a vow to me. Now leave this land at once and return to the land of your birth.’ ”


Then the Lord said to Jacob, “Return to the land of your ancestors and to your kindred, and I will be with you.”


But they said, “Should our sister be treated like a whore?”


So Jacob called the place where God had spoken with him Bethel.


and there he built an altar and called the place El-bethel, because it was there that God had revealed himself to him when he fled from his brother.


God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.


He chose our heritage for us, the pride of Jacob whom he loves. Selah


When they call to me, I will answer them; I will be with them in trouble, I will rescue them and honor them.


When Pharaoh heard of it, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from Pharaoh. He settled in the land of Midian, and sat down by a well.


He strove with the angel and prevailed, he wept and sought his favor; he met him at Bethel, and there he spoke with him.


Look! On the mountains the feet of one who brings good tidings, who proclaims peace! Celebrate your festivals, O Judah, fulfill your vows, for never again shall the wicked invade you; they are utterly cut off.


Indeed the Lord will vindicate his people, have compassion on his servants, when he sees that their power is gone, neither bond nor free remaining.


Then you shall go on from there further and come to the oak of Tabor; three men going up to God at Bethel will meet you there, one carrying three kids, another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a skin of wine.
