as when an east wind shatters the ships of Tarshish.


As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God, which God establishes forever. Selah


Wail, O ships of Tarshish, for your fortress is destroyed.


Your rigging hangs loose; it cannot hold the mast firm in its place, or keep the sail spread out. Then prey and spoil in abundance will be divided; even the lame will fall to plundering.


Like the wind from the east, I will scatter them before the enemy. I will show them my back, not my face, in the day of their calamity.


For thus says the Lord God: When I make you a city laid waste, like cities that are not inhabited, when I bring up the deep over you, and the great waters cover you,


Your riches, your wares, your merchandise, your mariners and your pilots, your caulkers, your dealers in merchandise, and all your warriors within you, with all the company that is with you, sink into the heart of the seas on the day of your ruin.


Now you are wrecked by the seas, in the depths of the waters; your merchandise and all your crew have sunk with you.


They shall thrust you down to the Pit, and you shall die a violent death in the heart of the seas.


But soon a violent wind, called the northeaster, rushed down from Crete.


But striking a reef, they ran the ship aground; the bow stuck and remained immovable, but the stern was being broken up by the force of the waves.


And he said to me, “The waters that you saw, where the whore is seated, are peoples and multitudes and nations and languages.
