Shecaniah son of Jehiel, of the descendants of Elam, addressed Ezra, saying, “We have broken faith with our God and have married foreign women from the peoples of the land, but even now there is hope for Israel in spite of this.


Then Ezra stood up and made the leading priests, the Levites, and all Israel swear that they would do as had been said. So they swore.


He led them in safety, so that they were not afraid; but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.


Now listen to me. I will give you counsel, and God be with you! You should represent the people before God, and you should bring their cases before God;


If you do this, and God so commands you, then you will be able to endure, and all these people will go to their home in peace.”


Moses chose able men from all Israel and appointed them as heads over the people, as officers over thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens.


Let the wise also hear and gain in learning, and the discerning acquire skill,


The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.”


At that time I said to you, “I am unable by myself to bear you.
